Although the art of fantasy has its roots in religion, is more strongly influenced by mythology and folklore. They seem to have evolved in parallel in different parts of the world, from ancient Greek mythology to African traditions and the magic of Chinese folk culture. Ancient representations of fantastic works of art hanging in galleries around the world showing images of demons, angels, gods, dragons and spirits. It is still very popular, although more recent works, generally not considered "art."

In 1500, Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch can be considered one of the best views of the artist in history. It is famous for his triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights." The first panel shows Adam and Eve in Paradise, the second, a world full of delights earth and hell-thirds full of various kinds of sinners. There is debate about whether his job is to represent the orthodox religious views, to satirize the church, or just for fun.

Fantasy art has seen an explosion of popularity in the twentieth century that photography makes the more traditional representation, in a sense, obsolete. When the movements of others began to focus on other ways of representing images, such as Expressionism, Cubism and abstraction, Great artists paint pictures with a traditional aesthetic, but a representation impossible. Surrealist Artists are similar in this regard.

There is often great skill in question, is rarely considered part of the Western canon. It is most strongly associated with the subculture of fantasy that people of art, and rarely find their way into the galleries. There are some exceptions, such as Le Château in the Pyrenees by Rene Magritte, a castle atop a floating mountain. But the work of Magritte as a whole is more closely associated with the Surrealist movement. The same goes for John William Waterhouse, whose work was influenced by Greek mythology, but Pre-Raphaelite is considered instead of fantasy.

Today, it has become very popular among fans of fantasy. This is probably due to its popularity is often ignored by the academic audience.
